7. The Air Traffic Control System Innovation
Archie W. League pioneers air traffic control in St. Louis, shaping aviation safety in 1929.

In 1929, Archie W. League became the first air traffic controller in St. Louis, Missouri, using flags to direct aircraft and prevent collisions. This marked the beginning of organized air traffic control in the United States. By 1936, the federal government established the Bureau of Air Commerce, which took over operations of the Newark, Chicago, and Cleveland control centers, laying the foundation for today’s Air Route Traffic Control Centers. The introduction of radar in the 1940s further revolutionized air traffic management, allowing controllers to monitor aircraft positions more accurately. In the 1960s, automation systems were implemented to streamline flight data processing and enhance safety. Today, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) continues to innovate, replacing outdated technologies like floppy disks and Windows 95 software with modern systems to ensure efficient and safe air traffic management.
