15. Chang and Eng Bunker
The original ‘Siamese twins,’ Chang and Eng Bunker, defied social barriers, raising families, running businesses, and educating the public on tolerance and disability at a time of prejudice. Born in Siam (now Thailand) in 1811, they were conjoined at the sternum. After being brought to the United States in 1829, they became famous as curiosities. In 1843, they married sisters Adelaide and Sarah Yates, fathering 21 children between them. They settled in North Carolina, where they became naturalized citizens and plantation owners. Their lives challenged societal norms and highlighted issues of race and disability (smithsonianmag.com).
