Vikings, known as Varangians in the east, targeted Constantinople several times, notably in 860 and again in the 10th century. Using their river networks, they reached the heart of Byzantium, sometimes serving as mercenaries in the elite Varangian Guard after failed raids. Their presence left a mark on Byzantine military history (via Encyclopaedia Britannica).
