Spain once ruled vast territories in the Americas and Europe, enriched by New World gold. Yet, extravagant spending, constant warfare, and inflation caused economic turmoil. The loss of the Spanish Armada and colonial possessions accelerated its decline. By the 19th century, Spain was a shadow of its former glory.
