11. The Affair and Death of Thomas Culpeper
In 1541, Thomas Culpeper, a gentleman of the Privy Chamber, was implicated in an alleged affair with Queen Catherine Howard, Henry VIII’s fifth wife. Catherine, who had been married to Henry for just over a year, was accused of engaging in secret meetings with Culpeper, which were considered treasonous. Under interrogation, Culpeper admitted to intending to have sexual relations with the Queen, though he denied any actual misconduct. Both Culpeper and Francis Dereham, another man associated with Catherine, were tried for treason and executed on December 10, 1541. Culpeper was beheaded, while Dereham was hanged, drawn, and quartered. Their heads were displayed on London Bridge as a warning to others. Catherine Howard was arrested and stripped of her title as Queen in November 1541. She was executed on February 13, 1542, at the Tower of London.
