8. The Atlantic Charter
In August 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill met aboard naval vessels in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, to discuss their war aims and outline a vision for the postwar world. This meeting resulted in the Atlantic Charter, a joint declaration that set forth eight principles, including the right of all peoples to choose their own form of government and the establishment of a peace that would afford all nations the means of dwelling in safety within their own boundaries. These principles laid the foundation for the establishment of the United Nations and have continued to influence international relations.
