4. Preventing Regional Instability
Interventions are sometimes justified to prevent conflicts from spreading regionally. For instance, NATO’s involvement in the Balkans during the 1990s aimed to stop ethnic violence and wider destabilization. In 1992, NATO began patrolling the Adriatic Sea to enforce UN sanctions and a no-fly zone over Bosnia and Herzegovina. This marked the Alliance’s first out-of-area deployment, signaling its commitment to regional stability (nato.int).
