4. Coffee

Coffee’s stimulating effects once made it a target for bans and suspicion. In 16th-century Mecca, authorities feared coffeehouses would foster political dissent and banned the drink outright. Similar crackdowns occurred in Europe and the Ottoman Empire, where coffee was sometimes blamed for health problems or social unrest.
