9. The Kingdom of Aksum
The Kingdom of Aksum, famed for its monumental stelae and as an early center of Christianity, was a dominant force in East Africa. By the 7th century CE, however, Aksum experienced a rapid decline. Shifting trade routes, combined with growing environmental pressures such as soil exhaustion and drought, eroded its economic base.
