9. Real Historical Figures as Inspiration
Several major characters in Shōgun are inspired by real figures, such as Toranaga based on Tokugawa Ieyasu and Blackthorne on English navigator William Adams. Adams became one of the first Western samurai, paralleling Blackthorne’s journey in the story. Lady Mariko is primarily inspired by Hosokawa Gracia, a historical noblewoman and Christian convert who was the daughter of the samurai Akechi Mitsuhide.
