2. The War of Jenkins’ Ear
In the 1730s, a peculiar incident involving Captain Robert Jenkins set the stage for a conflict between Britain and Spain. While sailing near the Spanish coast, Jenkins was captured and had his ear severed by Spanish forces as a warning against smuggling. Upon his return to Britain, Jenkins famously presented his ear before Parliament, rallying public outrage. This grisly spectacle provided Britain with the pretext it needed to declare war on Spain in 1739.
