Trilobites and crabs: distinct arthropod lineages separated by millions of years of evolution.

The belief that trilobites were direct ancestors of modern crabs is a common misconception. Trilobites were an extinct group of marine arthropods that lived from the Cambrian to the Permian period, approximately 520 to 250 million years ago. They represent a unique lineage within the arthropods and went extinct long before the appearance of crabs. Crabs, on the other hand, are decapod crustaceans that evolved much later, during the Mesozoic era. Therefore, trilobites and crabs are not directly related in terms of ancestry.
