5. Egyptians Worshipped Cats Above All
The image of Ancient Egyptians obsessed with cats is widespread, but it exaggerates reality. While cats were highly respected and even mummified, they were not at the top of the religious hierarchy. Major gods like Ra, Isis, and Osiris played far more central roles in Egyptian worship. Cat imagery and burials show reverence, not supreme devotion. As the Met Museum notes, cats were honored companions, not ultimate deities.
