12. The Red River Jail and Mob Rule
In the Red River region, jails offered little protection from the volatile forces of mob rule. Angry crowds frequently stormed the cells, seizing prisoners to exact their own brand of justice—often ending in lynchings. Lawmen, either powerless or on the take, struggled to maintain order or simply looked the other way. This atmosphere of fear and unpredictability made the Red River jails infamous, underscoring how easily the line between law and lawlessness could vanish on the frontier.
