8. The Civil Rights Movement’s Armed Wing
Although nonviolence was the face of the Civil Rights Movement, an armed wing quietly operated in the background. These groups and individuals protected activists and neighborhoods from violent attacks, providing an essential counterbalance to the ever-present threat of white supremacist aggression.
