Jane’s reputation for being meek, barely educated, and passive doesn’t give the full picture of her personality. She was spunky. Jane’s role as lady-in-waiting for Queen Anne kept her at court and Henry’s presence. When Henry began to favor Jane over Anne, he gifted her a locket with his portrait.

She boldly wore it in front of Anne, at one point opening and closing it in front of the pregnant Queen, who ripped it from her neck. Jane’s flirtations with Henry are often cited as the trigger for Anne’s final miscarriage. She remained friends with Katherine’s daughter, Mary, who also despised Anne for what she did to her mother. And the two watched Anne’s downfall, likely with a little glee.
