10. Captured by Akechi Mitsuhide

Shortly after Nobunaga’s tragic end at Honno-ji, Yasuke found himself captured by Akechi Mitsuhide’s forces. Mitsuhide, uncertain about Yasuke’s unique position, deliberated on his fate, ultimately deciding against execution due to Yasuke’s foreign origins. Viewing him not as a samurai, but rather as a curiosity or outsider undeserving of the traditional samurai death, Mitsuhide chose instead to strip Yasuke of his weapons and release him. This decision, reflecting the complex attitudes toward foreigners in feudal Japan, abruptly ended Yasuke’s samurai career, forcing him to confront an uncertain future far different from the distinguished role he once enjoyed.
