Meerut: The Revolt Begins

On May 10, 1857, the simmering tensions boiled over in Meerut, a key military cantonment in northern India. Following the imprisonment of several sepoys who refused to use the controversial cartridges, their fellow soldiers broke ranks, openly rebelling against British authority. The insurgents swiftly freed their imprisoned comrades, attacked British officers, and ignited widespread violence throughout the city. This bold uprising quickly spread, encouraging nearby regions to rise up against colonial rule. Meerut became the epicenter of a rapidly expanding rebellion, setting off a chain reaction that would soon engulf large territories of British-controlled India.
