8. The Carandiru Escape (2001, Brazil)
In 2001, a riot and ensuing violence at São Paulo’s Carandiru Penitentiary enabled at least 100 prisoners to escape. The chaos drew global attention to Brazil’s prison issues and led to calls for reform. It was one of the most notorious prisons in South America at the time (bbc.com).
