On December 13, 2000, seven inmates escaped from the John B. Connally Unit in Texas by overpowering civilian workers and prison employees. They stole uniforms, firearms, and a prison truck, initiating a nationwide manhunt. Their crime spree included robbing a Radio Shack and, on December 24, a sporting goods store in Irving, Texas, where they killed Officer Aubrey Hawkins.
