5. Liberty City, Miami
Liberty City was established in the 1930s as a segregated Black community, built to relieve Miami’s overcrowded slums yet shaped by systemic discrimination. Decades of economic struggle, underinvestment, and limited opportunity created a powder keg of frustration. In 1980, the acquittal of police officers in the death of Arthur McDuffie sparked days of unrest, thrusting Liberty City into the national spotlight.
