13. Subsequent Milestones in Diversity on Magazine Covers

Following Beverly Johnson’s transformative 1974 cover, numerous milestones further advanced racial representation in fashion media. In 1989, Naomi Campbell broke barriers as the first Black model on the September issue of American Vogue, traditionally the magazine’s most significant annual edition. Tyra Banks made history in 1997 as the first Black model to land a solo cover for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, broadening mainstream definitions of beauty. More recent breakthroughs include Lupita Nyong’o’s acclaimed 2014 Vogue cover, celebrated internationally for embracing darker skin tones. These continued achievements reflect an evolving industry landscape, demonstrating incremental yet meaningful progress toward inclusive representation.
