On the morning of December 16, 1707, the residents of Edo — the bustling, canal-laced city that would one day become Tokyo — stepped outside to find their world dusted in grey. Ash was falling like dirty snow, settling on rooftops, coating the surface of the Sumida River, and drifting into the folds of their clothing. The volcano responsible for this slow, suffocating blizzard was Mount Fuji, more than 100 kilometres to the southwest — and for sixteen relentless days, it would ensure that a million people never forgot it was alive.
Three centuries later, roughly 37 million people live within range of the same mountain. It has not erupted since. That fact is either reassuring or clarifying, depending on how seriously you take the historical record.
A Mountain Built from Catastrophe: 100,000 Years of Volcanic History

The silhouette of Fuji is so perfectly conical, so composed against the sky, that it is easy to mistake it for something serene. It is not. That elegant shape is the accumulated scar tissue of thousands of eruptions, each depositing another layer of lava and ash, slowly constructing one of the most recognisable landforms on Earth through processes that were, individually, violent and destructive.
Volcanic activity in what geologists call the Fuji volcanic zone first pierced the landscape of Honshu island roughly 100,000 years ago. Geologists have identified distinct ancestral phases in the mountain’s construction — older volcanic edifices that preceded and underpinned the cone we see today. The mountain grew in stages, lava flow by lava flow, partial collapse by partial collapse, until the younger cone asserted itself and built toward the sky. It now stands at 3,776 metres, making it Japan’s highest peak, the seventh-highest island volcano on Earth, and the second-highest volcano on any Asian island, surpassed only by Mount Kerinci on Sumatra.
Every metre of that height was earned violently. The symmetrical beauty that draws millions of pilgrims and photographers each year is, in geological terms, a monument to catastrophe — shaped not by stillness but by the same forces that, on a winter morning three centuries ago, turned the sky over Edo the colour of dead ash.
Fuji’s Eruption Record: The Events That Shaped a Nation

Long before 1707, Fuji had already written itself into Japanese history. Court records from the Nara and Heian periods — roughly the 700s through the 900s CE — describe eruptions that sent visible flame columns toward the imperial capital, raining ash and unsettling omens down on a society that interpreted such events as messages from the gods. The mountain was simultaneously worshipped and feared, a paradox that has never entirely resolved itself in Japanese culture.
The most consequential pre-modern eruption on record is the Jogan eruption of 864 CE. Lava poured north from the mountain’s flanks in volumes sufficient to reshape the landscape permanently. A lake called Senoumi was divided into two separate bodies of water — what are now known as Saiko and Shojiko, two of the Fuji Five Lakes. The lava field that cooled from that event became the floor of the Aokigahara forest, the dense, compass-defying woodland at Fuji’s northwestern base whose strange character still unsettles visitors today. To walk through Aokigahara is to walk on the hardened remains of a ninth-century catastrophe.
These eruptions carved Fuji into Japanese culture as deeply as they carved the landscape itself. The Sengen-Taisha shrine tradition grew up around the mountain, venerating Fuji’s resident deity in part as a means of appeasing a force that could, at any moment, choose to be terrifying again. Rice harvests in the surrounding plains lived and died by what the volcano chose to do with the wind.
Then, for roughly half a century before 1707, Fuji went quiet. It is the silence that makes what came next feel, in the historical sources, like a betrayal.
The Hoei Eruption of 1707: Japan’s Last Major Volcanic Event

The ground had already been screaming that autumn. Just 49 days before Fuji’s flank cracked open, one of the largest earthquakes in Japanese recorded history — the Hoei earthquake, estimated at around magnitude 8.6 — had shuddered through the region, toppling buildings, triggering tsunamis along the Pacific coast, and killing thousands. The population was already traumatised, still repairing and grieving, when the mountain chose to speak.
On December 16, 1707, the southeastern flank of Mount Fuji split open and a new vent blasted itself into existence. That vent, now known as Hoei-zan, became the outlet through which the mountain expelled an estimated 800 million cubic metres of ash and volcanic debris over sixteen days of sustained eruption. It was not a slow, lava-oozing event. It was explosive, punching material high into the atmosphere and letting the prevailing wind carry it northeast — directly toward Edo and the densely farmed Kanto plain.
Closer to the volcano, the destruction was immediate and absolute. Villages on Fuji’s slopes and in surrounding valleys were buried or abandoned. Ash accumulations exceeded 50 centimetres across large areas of farmland, making agriculture impossible for years afterward. The Tokugawa shogunate, which drew much of its agricultural wealth from the Kanto region, faced an economic crisis that outlasted the eruption itself. Famine followed the ash. Poverty followed the famine. The human cost radiated outward from the mountain like a shockwave that took years, not months, to dissipate.
In Edo, more than 100 kilometres away, the crisis was slower but no less surreal. Ash settled on the city in quantities sufficient to collapse rooftops, clog the Sumida River, and reduce midday to a grey twilight. Contemporary diaries recorded the eerie quality of the light, the muffled sounds of the city, and the strange sight of Edo residents shovelling volcanic powder from their eaves the way northern cities shovel snow. Rice prices spiked. The shogunate organised relief efforts and granted tax relief to the hardest-hit villages — an early, revealing example of disaster governance, taken seriously precisely because the threat was so visible and so total.
The Hoei eruption entered Japan’s cultural bloodstream and never fully left. It shadowed artists and writers for generations. When Katsushika Hokusai created his celebrated woodblock series depicting Fuji from thirty-six angles in the early nineteenth century, there was always something watchful in the images — a latent acknowledgement that the mountain’s beauty and its menace were the same thing, inseparable and permanent.
What Scientists Are Watching Now

The Hoei eruption remains, as of this writing, the last time Mount Fuji erupted. More than three centuries have passed. Volcanologists, however, are not in the business of treating silence as safety, and Fuji has given them reasons for careful attention in recent decades.
Around 2000 and 2001, seismic activity beneath the mountain increased noticeably. Then, in 2011, the catastrophic Tōhoku earthquake — the event that triggered the Fukushima nuclear disaster — sent stress rippling through tectonic structures beneath central Honshu, including the magmatic system under Fuji. Researchers noted elevated pressure in the magma chamber following the Tōhoku quake, and published findings describing conditions that, in principle, could lower the threshold for future activity. Scientists logged these developments with the focused seriousness of people who treat 1707 as a planning document rather than ancient history.
Japan’s volcano monitoring network tracks ground deformation, gas emissions, and micro-earthquakes around the mountain in real time. Fuji is currently rated at Alert Level 1 — the lowest active watch level — meaning it is monitored but not showing signs of imminent eruption. That is reassuring, to a point. The point being that Fuji has spent long stretches of its history at apparent rest before erupting without the modern warning period scientists would prefer.
Ash-fall modelling conducted by Japanese government researchers offers a sobering picture of what a Hoei-scale eruption would mean today. Greater Tokyo is home to roughly 37 million people. The logistics infrastructure of East Asia — international airports, high-speed rail networks, highways, and container ports — passes through or near the region. Volcanic ash in sufficient quantities does not merely inconvenience; it grounds aircraft, disables electrical systems, contaminates water supplies, and renders roads impassable. A major Fuji eruption in the twenty-first century would not be a regional disaster. It would constitute a disruption with global economic consequences.
The Enduring Paradox: Sacred Symbol, Dormant Threat

And yet. Every clear morning, from countless windows and bullet-train platforms and city rooftops across the Kanto region, people look southwest and find Fuji there — white-capped, perfectly conical, hanging above the horizon like something from a woodblock print. It appears on the ¥1,000 banknote. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a pilgrimage destination that draws hundreds of thousands of climbers each summer. It is, by any measure, Japan’s most beloved landmark and one of the most recognised landforms on the planet.
The Japanese aesthetic concept of mono no aware — the bittersweet, aching beauty of impermanence — feels almost purpose-built for a mountain like this one. Its beauty is real. Its danger is real. And the two are not separable, because the beauty is the direct product of the danger: every graceful curve of that cone was deposited by an eruption, every pilgrim who reaches the summit stands on compressed centuries of ancient catastrophe.
Understanding Mount Fuji’s volcanic history is not merely geological curiosity for the academically inclined. It is essential context for one of the most densely populated regions on Earth — a place where tens of millions of people conduct their daily lives within range of a mountain that has never truly gone quiet, only patient.
In 1707, the people of Edo brushed grey ash from their sleeves and peered southwest through the haze, trying to see the mountain they knew was responsible. They could not. On a clear winter day from modern Tokyo, you can see Fuji perfectly — sharp and white and enormous against the sky, beautiful in the way that only genuinely dangerous things can be. It is still there. And somewhere beneath that famous symmetry, the fires that built it have not gone out.
