4. Their Historical Origins
Memorial Day originated after the Civil War as “Decoration Day,” a time to honor fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers and flags. In 1868, Major General John A. Logan designated May 30 for this purpose. Over time, the holiday expanded to honor all military personnel who died in service to the nation. (history.com)
Veterans Day began as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, marking the end of World War I. In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to honor all U.S. military veterans.
