1. Prisoners of War
Captured soldiers from Rome’s conquests were often compelled to fight as gladiators. These men, taken as prisoners, had little choice but to battle for their lives—a fate common for Gauls, Thracians, and other conquered peoples. The first gladiators may have been prisoners of war or criminals (nationalgeographic.com). Initially, these contests had religious significance, associated with rites of death.
