In the early 20th century, the notorious syphilis experiments at Cold Springs Harbor targeted African American prisoners, exposing deep-seated racial and ethical injustices. Researchers intentionally infected inmates with syphilis or withheld treatment to study the disease’s progression. Prisoners, often unaware of the true nature of the experiments, were exploited due to their vulnerable status and race.
