Monastery Animals Through History
Medieval monasteries relied on both cats and dogs to protect their valuable manuscripts and food stores. Cats hunted mice that threatened to destroy precious parchment documents in library rooms. Dogs guarded the monastery grounds from thieves and wild animals at night. Monks recorded stories of particularly clever monastery pets in their chronicles. Some illuminated manuscripts feature drawings of these helpful animals.
