The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, with its distinctive black-and-white spiral, towers above the shifting sands of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Since 1803, it has bravely watched over the treacherous waters known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” where countless ships met their fate. Standing as the tallest brick lighthouse in the nation, its very presence is a testament to human ingenuity. In 1999, the lighthouse was famously relocated 2,900 feet inland to save it from encroaching shoreline erosion—a remarkable engineering achievement.
