17. Cannae and the U.S. Civil War
The lessons of Cannae deeply influenced American Civil War generals, notably Robert E. Lee. Lee aspired to deliver a “Cannae-like” defeat to Union forces, especially at battles such as Chancellorsville. While some maneuvers echoed Hannibal’s encirclement tactics, few succeeded on the same scale. The complexity of terrain, logistics, and modern weaponry often thwarted complete encirclements.
