Elliott Roosevelt, Eleanor’s father, was President Theodore Roosevelt’s younger brother. Like his brother, Elliot was quick-tempered and brash. He was also a heavy drinker and frequently made promises to young Eleanor – promises of travel to exotic places, like India – that, due to his heavy drinking, he was unable to keep. Still, her drunkard father was the only person that she felt safe around.
