11. DDT
Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) was hailed as a miracle pesticide upon its introduction in the 1940s, effectively controlling malaria and typhus. However, its widespread use led to environmental degradation, as DDT accumulated in wildlife, causing reproductive issues and thinning eggshells in birds of prey. The chemical’s persistence in the environment resulted in long-term ecological damage, prompting a reevaluation of chemical use in agriculture. In response, many countries have implemented bans and restrictions on DDT to mitigate its harmful effects (epa.gov).
