12. Loss of Trust in Institutions
Trust is the bedrock of stable societies. When citizens lose faith in governmental, legal, or social institutions, unrest and disintegration can follow. The Soviet Union’s collapse, for example, was hastened by a pervasive sense of institutional illegitimacy. Modern surveys like the Edelman Trust Barometer illustrate how declining confidence in institutions continues to pose serious risks to societal cohesion today.
