3. The Venezuela Boundary Crisis (1895)
In 1895, a longstanding territorial dispute between Venezuela and British Guiana over the Essequibo region escalated, threatening to draw the United States into conflict with Britain. Venezuela appealed to the U.S., invoking the Monroe Doctrine, which opposes European colonialism in the Americas. President Grover Cleveland’s administration demanded arbitration, leading Britain to accept U.S. intervention. This diplomatic resolution set a precedent for peaceful conflict resolution in the Western Hemisphere (history.state.gov).
