5. Srebrenica Massacre and Dutchbat
The 1995 Srebrenica massacre saw over 8,000 Bosnian Muslims killed, despite the presence of UN peacekeepers known as Dutchbat. Tasked with protecting civilians in a designated “safe area,” the peacekeepers were overwhelmed and unable to prevent the atrocity. Subsequent investigations pointed to grave failures in leadership and preparedness. The Dutch government eventually accepted partial responsibility, but the episode remains a chilling example of UN peacekeeping shortcomings in the face of mass violence.
