6. Sense of Purpose and Duty
Many British soldiers, known as “Tommies,” felt immense pride in serving King and Country, finding purpose in defending Britain and its empire. Letters home often express a sense of honor in service. For instance, Lieutenant John Cazenove Poole wrote to his sisters from his billets near the village of Bois Grenier on 18 January 1915, describing his experiences and the camaraderie among soldiers.
