As invading forces advanced, Russian defenders employed scorched earth tactics, systematically destroying crops, infrastructure, and resources to deprive enemies of sustenance and shelter. During Napoleon’s 1812 invasion, retreating Russian armies burned villages and poisoned wells, leaving the French army without supplies. Similarly, in World War II, the Soviet Red Army dismantled factories and destroyed infrastructure during their retreat, hindering German forces’ progress.
