11. Syria
Once a cradle of civilization, Syria has faced profound challenges since 2011. The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 12 million people fleeing their homes, with more than 7 million displaced internally and 6 million as refugees abroad. The economy has contracted significantly, with the GDP losing 54% of its 2010 level by 2018. The humanitarian crisis has been exacerbated by the destruction of infrastructure, including homes, schools, and health facilities, leading to widespread poverty and instability (syria.un.org).
