2. Suez Crisis (1956)
The Suez Crisis of 1956 was a significant event that exposed deep divisions within the Western alliance. In response to Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s nationalization of the Suez Canal, the United Kingdom, France, and Israel—members of NATO—secretly coordinated military action against Egypt. This operation, known as the Protocol of Sèvres, aimed to regain control of the canal and depose Nasser. However, the United States, under President Dwight D. Eisenhower, opposed the invasion, leading to a ceasefire and highlighting the lack of unity among NATO members (britannica.com).
