2. Inuit Endured Forced Relocations
In the mid-20th century, Danish authorities relocated entire Inuit communities to facilitate military installations and urbanization. These relocations fractured family ties, threatened traditional lifestyles, and left deep scars in Greenlandic society. For instance, in 1953, 27 Inuit families were moved 130 kilometers north to Qaanaaq to make way for the Thule Air Base, established under a Danish-American defense agreement (lemonde.fr).
