15. Ancient Myths and Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey
George Lucas, the creator of *Star Wars*, drew extensively from Joseph Campbell’s concept of the “monomyth,” or Hero’s Journey, to shape Luke Skywalker’s path. Campbell’s theory, detailed in his book *The Hero with a Thousand Faces*, identifies a universal narrative pattern found in myths worldwide.
In *Star Wars*, Luke’s journey mirrors this structure: he begins in the ordinary world of Tatooine, receives a call to adventure through R2-D2’s message, and undergoes trials that lead to personal transformation. This narrative framework aligns with storytelling traditions from Greek, Norse, and other ancient myths, where heroes embark on quests, face challenges, and return changed.
