Juliette Noel, daughter of a plantation owner and an enslaved woman in Saint-Domingue, emigrated to the United States in the wake of the Haitian Revolution. Together with her husband, Pierre Toussaint, Juliette became a deeply respected philanthropist and abolitionist in New York City.
