12. The Tower of Silence (Iran/India)
Zoroastrian Towers of Silence, found in Iran and India, were circular stone structures where the dead were left exposed to vultures. This practice stemmed from the belief that corpses would contaminate sacred elements like earth and fire. By allowing nature to reclaim the body, Zoroastrians sought spiritual purity while confronting the unsettling realities of death and decay.
