The Iroquois Confederacy developed a complex system of democratic governance centuries before the founding of the United States. This confederation emphasized participatory decision-making, consensus-building, and a balance of power among nations. Elements of this system—including checks and balances and federal structures—influenced the framers of the U.S. Constitution.
