Ross Castle

Perched elegantly along the serene shores of Lough Leane in Killarney National Park, Ross Castle captivates visitors with its picturesque lakeside setting and enduring tales. Built in the late 15th century by the O’Donoghue clan, this fortress is steeped in legend, notably the tale of its founder O’Donoghue Mór, who is said to awake from his enchanted slumber beneath the lake every seven years. Unlike other lakeside castles such as Lough Eske Castle in Donegal, Ross Castle played a pivotal role during Ireland’s Cromwellian wars, symbolizing Gaelic resistance and resilience amidst breathtaking natural beauty.
