The Last Execution via Guillotine Was in 1977
When most people hear the word “guillotine”, their mind goes to the famous executions during the French Revolution of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI. The very first execution via guillotine happened in 1792. Over the course of its existence, over 10,000 people have been killed by the guillotine.
However, what most people don’t realize is that the guillotine continued to be used as a form of enacting the death penalty in France, and it never really stopped until its last use in 1977. Then, in 1981, capital punishment was abolished altogether, so they no longer have the death penalty in France.
