6. The Fort Pillow Massacre
The Fort Pillow Massacre, which occurred on April 12, 1864, remains one of the most infamous events in Nathan Bedford Forrest’s military career. During an assault on the fort, Forrest’s troops encountered a garrison mostly composed of African American soldiers.
After the fort’s surrender, many of these soldiers were killed, leading to accusations of war crimes against Forrest. The incident sparked outrage in the North and became a rallying cry for anti-Confederate sentiment.
