For all its world-historical importance, Sumer had been completely invisible to modern scholarship until the middle of the nineteenth century. The decades following the Nineveh discoveries brought systematic excavation to the sites of Sumer itself. The sheer drama of those discoveries — the golden objects, the scale of the mortuary ritual they implied, the questions about power and belief they raised — made Sumer undeniable to a general public that statistics and cuneiform tablets alone could never have reached. The cradle of civilization had been hiding beneath the Iraqi desert for nearly four thousand years, waiting for someone to ask the right questions of the ground.

The story of Sumer is, in the end, two stories braided together: the story of a civilization that originated so much of what later humanity took for granted — cities, writing, law, the wheel, fermentation at industrial scale — and the story of how recently, and how accidentally, we realized it had ever existed at all. That double narrative is its own kind of lesson: the past is always larger, stranger, and more consequential than whatever portion of it we happen, at any given moment, to remember.
