8. Slavery and Norse Law
Under Norse law, slaves were considered property with almost no personal rights. Owners could buy, sell, or even punish thralls at will, though certain laws offered minimal protection against excessive brutality. Rarely, slaves could earn or be granted their freedom—a process known as manumission—but such opportunities were exceptional.
