During the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, German forces encircled the town of Bastogne, Belgium, aiming to capture its strategic crossroads. On December 22, the German commander delivered an ultimatum demanding the town’s surrender. Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe, acting commander of the 101st Airborne Division, responded with a single word: “Nuts!” This defiant reply boosted American morale.
