1. The Birth of the Crips
The Crips emerged in South Central Los Angeles in 1969, founded by Raymond Washington and later joined by Stanley “Tookie” Williams. Originally conceived as a community organization aimed at self-defense and empowerment during the turbulent civil rights era, the Crips reflected the frustrations and hopes of Black youth. Over time, however, the group’s mission shifted, evolving into a powerful—and often violent—gang that would forever alter the streets of Los Angeles.
